SAN
stands for the Secure Accommodation Network which represents
and promotes the work of Secure Children's Homes in England
and Wales. The group was set up in the mid-1980's (see history)
as a result of a recognition that this area of work was undervalued,
often misunderstood and not well represented in the range
of forums where work with difficult and damaged young people
was discussed. The Network also has links with a range
of organisations as diverse as the Voice of the Child in Care
and the Howard League.
The Secure Accommodation Network exists to promote and develop
the highest quality of care for young people. The work of
the Network is promoted by the Unit Managers and Heads of
Education. It is done on a voluntary basis in addition to
the "day job" and it is dependent upon the goodwill,
commitment and professionalism of those working in secure
care.
This
website is designed to explain the work of SAN to a wider
audience. It will be developed further and all suggestions
are warmly welcomed.
"Secure accommodation should
be used when all other options have been considered
rather than should be used after every other option has been
tried"
Jon Banwell, Ex-Chair, SAN
